What reviewers have to say about The Long Trails series:

(No, there aren’t any yet for A Sea of Green Unfolding!  Be the first!  Just released today!)

The Hills of Gold Unchanging:

“The pace is fast, there’s plenty of action and adventure and a few twists I didn’t see coming. Lizzi Tremayne writes good characters, and that definitely includes the horses. For me, though, it’s the history that’s the star in this story. Good characters plus excellent history equals a great read, which is what this is.”
Deborah Challinor, number one bestselling author and historian

“…superb storytelling. As Aleksandra and Xavier faced and survived human malevolence, natural disaster and accidents, and their own doubts and insecurities, I kept turning pages to find out what happened next. I love books in which adversity sculptures character and where challenges to relationships bend them to breakpoint and rebuild them stronger. This is one of those books. I can’t wait to read the sequel.”
Judy Knighton, editor

“There are so many things to like about this story. Lead characters, Aleks and Xavier, are well rounded and strong. Aleks has a stubborn streak and a determination to survive, no matter what. Both inspired me to cheer them on as they faced one problem after another along the way from Utah to California. The plot is well developed, and I particularly liked the attention to historical detail along the way. This is an author who does her homework, and it shows. I was intrigued by this story, and wish I’d read the first in the series before venturing onto this one. Despite that, this story does stand alone well, and is a cracking good yarn.”
Shelagh Merlin, NetGalley Reviewer

A Long Trail Rolling:

“vivid, light and fast-paced…it will appeal in particular to anyone interested in American…history, and in general to those looking for a ripping good read. I’m looking forward to reading The Hills of Gold Unchanging, the next volume in the Aleksandra and Xavier saga”
Deborah Challinor, number one bestselling author and historian

“The mystery, adventure, and danger of life in Utah in the 1860s is beautifully described…an authentic, emotional story of one woman’s fight for survival in an unforgiving landscape. I couldn’t put Lizzi Tremayne’s book down.”
–Leeanna Morgan, USA Today bestselling author

“An impressive debut from a New Zealand (ex-American) author…a romance, a western, and an adventure story, all rolled up into a compelling read…I devoured this one and am hungry for more.”

Straight from the Horse’s Mouth Radio Show Interview is LIVE!

Hi All!

It’s today!

It’s TODAY!!!

Okay, backtrack, sorry.

Paula Slater of Straight from the Horse’s Mouth, in Canada, interviewed me last week for her Radio Show!

See three blogs down for the article I wrote for her to post on her site along with it!

Anyway, the interview is live on their website NOW at
http://www.straightfromthehorsesmouthradioshow.com/SFHM-Radio-Show-DarkLogo1400x1400

Hmmm. Two days ago, Paula asked me for some horseback archery photos…

Right…

Which of course, I didn’t have…

And right now, I have a mangled shoulder…

And a horse who’s been ridden three times in the past four and a half years…

Okay…

Elliot?  Can you please take some pics for me before school for ten minutes?

🙂

Okay…now, hmmm.

Can’t draw bow with mangled right shoulder, but can hold it with right and draw with left…and let go of the reins…
All I can say is… Maya was pretty awesome. Me in my silk reenactment dress all over his bum as well…

ArcherMaya CROPPED

He wasn’t highly impressed to have to canter around in the green grass, when he would’ve been happier eating it…

But he was pretty amazing.

Paula will be doing more interviews with me in future, one on equine dentistry (this goes to my veterinary website) and one on laminitis, for those horsey people out there!

Great New Review by The Phantom Paragrapher!

Hi All!

A great new review for A Long Trail Rolling has come through from Paula Phillips over at The Phantom Paragrapher!

Review: A Long Trail Rolling – Lizzi Tremayne – January 2015

Unlike Most Indie books when they come into the writing world , A Long Trail Rolling has won the 2014 RWNZ Pacific Hearts Award and was a finalist in the 2013 Great Beginnings Competition. A Long Trail Rolling was not normally a book I would read as I have never really been a huge fan of the historicals but as I would read through the pages, I discovered that A Long Trail Rolling was more than just your average historical romance novel. It had something for every reader from the Western theme with the main theme being that the character Aleksandra rode the Pony Express in the 1860’s , Utah in order to escape her father’s killer which brings me to the next theme of Suspense as Alek’s dad has been murdered and now in order to survive and not succumb to the same odds as her father has , Alek must ride in order to save her life and not become listed as one of the fallen. What’s a good story without a romance entanglement as Aleks meets along the way Xavier and with romance comes clashes as Aleks and Xavier have their moments where the reader hopes they will kiss and make-up as you want them to realise that they are better off together , not only due to their amazing chemistry but the fact that two heads are better than one when it comes to the odds of survival. The story ends on a cliffie, as we learn that their will be more in the series as it follows and leads eventually to Aleks arriving in New Zealand. What I did love about this book was the research that the authoress has put in as her love and knowledge of horses and the early American years has shone through her words and you know that what you are reading has a hint of reality to it which makes it seem even more real for the reader.

Overall , in parts this book reminded me of the Westerns my Grandad used to lend me and he would read himself – authors like Louis Lamour, as my mum’s side of the family grew up in the country and were surrounded by Horses and the Western lifestyle as well as Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Little House on the Prarie which I loved reading and watching on TV when I was a child.

If you love Westerns, Romance, History and Adventure – not to mention the feel of an Epic Saga novel then A Long Trail Rolling is the read for you.

So What are you waiting for folks, #SaveAHorse by Reading “A Long Trail Rolling”.

Manuscript is DONE! A little teaser from the story, especially for you horsey-types!

head shot cropped

Hello all,

I am very pleased to announce that the manuscript for Express Desired is done!

Hmmm… Let’s just say it it nice to see that I’m making progress in my writing skills… and finally implementing my new skills…. especially incorporating ‘showing’ vs ‘telling’, (and my critique partner will be so PLEASED) .

It’s good to see the improvement since I began writing, but it is a two-edged sword… it sure makes for a lot of editing and rewriting in the first half of the story.

Planning to send the first three chapters and synopsis to the editors and agents who requested it THIS WEEK!

Thanks for your comments, all.

Hugs,

Lizzi

P.S.  I’ve included in this post a little teaser for the story…  Hope you enjoy it!

Vladimir is the baddie in the story…  you horsy-people might appreciate this one!

*    *    *

The colt didn’t seem to know the way home to the Krzysztof’s cabin this time, so Vladimir’s return trip to the cabin, en route to the trading post, took much longer than  expected. Probably more likely, the bay colt didn’t particularly care about getting home, in light of the fact that since they turned around and headed back west towards the cabin, Vladimir’s mare had come fully on heat. He’d wondered if she was starting up over the previous few days, but there was no longer any doubt, the Russian’s mouth drew tight across gritted teeth.

He now understood why he’d been able to purchase this stunning, sound mare so cheaply at the end of last summer. Doubtless, the chestnut’s previous owner knew what she was like for the half of the year her reproductive cycle was active. Their little jaunt had become a trial. The young stallion was beside himself, travelling next to this winking, squealing and squirting hussy. It was much safer to ride the colt, as green and horny as he was, and be on top, rather than underneath him as he tried to breed the mare.

Vladimir found the shortcut to the cabin… just after he rode the bay past the half-hidden trailhead. Catching the Russian unawares, the colt looked back toward the track, then jerked the reins from Vladimir’s hand, spun on a dime and nearly dropped him as he dived into the trees, headed for home. The mare meanwhile threw up her head and reared, ripping her lead rope from his grip as the colt bolted.

‘You obviously knew that part of the way home,’ Vladimir growled and swore roundly at the beast in Russian, got him under control again and thanked whoever would listen that both horses had not left him stranded. It would be a long walk to anywhere and he didn’t particularly wish to be found at the cabin with all the graves and none of the former occupants.

He needn’t have worried he’d lose the mare. She couldn’t get close enough to the horse as they made their way down the narrow trail. She twice smashed his knee between her and the plunging colt, but Vladimir eventually managed to grab her trailing lead. A quick look around Krzysztof’s yard gave no evidence of habitation, so he refilled two bags with hay, slung them over the mare’s saddle horn and headed off down the larger track to find the trading post.

The Pony Express Mochila is Headed for Ft. Laramie!

Well done to all of you out there riding!  You might get a bit tired, but it’s not quite as dangerous as it was ‘back in the day’.

There were quite a few deaths (few riders, fortunately) amongst the Pony Express riders, but it was not for want to trying!

Hold on to that mochila!

Here’s an excerpt from my novel… Only Patrick Hearty and I have seen it so far, so hope some of you like it! They’ll be going through Lookout Pass soon!!!

Lookout Pass - Pony Express TrailThanks to Roger Douglass  (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/2329088)

A little taste of “Express Desire“:

Lookout Pass,” Aleksandra reminded herself as she passed the summit, looking north to see the distant white tops of the Onaqui Mountains and thought again of her papa and the fossil he’d fossicked for her from one of its rocky ledges. Beginning her mile-long descent at a trot on the handy little horse, she was absentmindedly fingering the fossil inside the medicine bag hung about her neck when she felt the first arrow whizz past her head from her right.

She felt her heart stop.

Aleksandra dropped to the left side of the Palouse’s neck into a Cossack hang, lying flat against his side.

She threw the reins at him and shouted to him.’Yah! Yah! Let’s go, Scout!’

He needed little urging to run full tilt down the steep and treacherously rocky trail as the yells of Indian warriors filled the narrow valley. The arrows came hard and fast from the southwest, like a mad bunch of hornets.

Smart, she thought, with a hint of a wry grin. The Indians had placed themselves between the trail and the setting sun, so Aleksandra could see little of her attackers in the glimpses she stole from beneath Scout’s neck of the world whizzing past. With the ground only three feet from her head, the scent of sage filled Aleksandra’s nostrils as the horse crashed through a clump of brush.

Briefly considering climbing back into the saddle to pull a gun from her saddlebag, she knew it would be akin to suicide; though she knew her full weight hanging off to one side had to put the stallion off his best, she trusted far more in the pony’s speed and ability. She just tried to stay out of his way and not hinder him needlessly, keeping as still as she could, tucked down on the side of the skidding and leaping beast. Praying the cinch would hold, she sent fervent thanks in the direction of the company selectors for choosing fast and handy local ponies. How I would love to have my bow and arrows, she thought, but it might just be better just to get Scout and I through alive to Doc Faust at Rush

The Palouse interrupted her musings as he threw up his head and reared, angrily trumpeting and shaking his head for a moment, nearly dropping Aleksandra, then resumed his headlong rush down the hill. When he carried on, she heard whistling sounds with every breath and turned her head forward to see where the noise was coming from. Then she saw the arrow. She felt herself break into a cold sweat…

The storyline…

Aleksandra, trained in the Cossack arts from infancy by her father, finds herself alone and running to prevent her Pa’s killer from obtaining a secret which could allow world domination by the Czar.  Disguised to most as a boy rider in 1860′s Utah Territory for the Pony Express, she finds in her “Californio” boss a strength to match her own and together they create a team that can overcome the odds.
