~ When you’ve lost everything,
the only way to go is up—
isn’t it? ~

Tragedy strikes in Aleksandra and Xavier’s newly-found paradise on their California Rancho de las Pulgas. Von Tempsky invites them on a journey to a new life in peaceful New Zealand, but change is in the wind. When they reach Aotearoa, they disembark into a turbulent wilderness—where the wars between the European settlers and the local Māori have only just begun.

What reviewers have to say about The Long Trails series:

(No, there aren’t any yet for A Sea of Green Unfolding!  Be the first!  Just released today!)

The Hills of Gold Unchanging:

“The pace is fast, there’s plenty of action and adventure and a few twists I didn’t see coming. Lizzi Tremayne writes good characters, and that definitely includes the horses. For me, though, it’s the history that’s the star in this story. Good characters plus excellent history equals a great read, which is what this is.”
Deborah Challinor, number one bestselling author and historian

“…superb storytelling. As Aleksandra and Xavier faced and survived human malevolence, natural disaster and accidents, and their own doubts and insecurities, I kept turning pages to find out what happened next. I love books in which adversity sculptures character and where challenges to relationships bend them to breakpoint and rebuild them stronger. This is one of those books. I can’t wait to read the sequel.”
Judy Knighton, editor

“There are so many things to like about this story. Lead characters, Aleks and Xavier, are well rounded and strong. Aleks has a stubborn streak and a determination to survive, no matter what. Both inspired me to cheer them on as they faced one problem after another along the way from Utah to California. The plot is well developed, and I particularly liked the attention to historical detail along the way. This is an author who does her homework, and it shows. I was intrigued by this story, and wish I’d read the first in the series before venturing onto this one. Despite that, this story does stand alone well, and is a cracking good yarn.”
Shelagh Merlin, NetGalley Reviewer

A Long Trail Rolling:

“vivid, light and fast-paced…it will appeal in particular to anyone interested in American…history, and in general to those looking for a ripping good read. I’m looking forward to reading The Hills of Gold Unchanging, the next volume in the Aleksandra and Xavier saga”
Deborah Challinor, number one bestselling author and historian

“The mystery, adventure, and danger of life in Utah in the 1860s is beautifully described…an authentic, emotional story of one woman’s fight for survival in an unforgiving landscape. I couldn’t put Lizzi Tremayne’s book down.”
   –Leeanna Morgan, USA Today bestselling author

“An impressive debut from a New Zealand (ex-American) author…a romance, a western, and an adventure story, all rolled up into a compelling read…I devoured this one and am hungry for more.”
   –Booksellers NZ

The Pony Express Rides Again!

Hi All!

It was Great!!!!

Grit in your teeth, hot, sweaty horses and people… and the mochila, being handed from horse to horse every two miles, for 2000 miles…

What else could it be but fantastic?

Here’s where our group started, at Simpson’s!

IMG_1397

It was a three-generation-Hearty Family affair, from Izzy, below shown with dad Matt, Gregg (a few pics below), Jeff (no pics, only saw him once!) and Kellie with her babies and hubby Kevin!

IMG_1393

Pat Hearty’s Group III  of the National Pony Express Association’s Utah Chapter took over the mochila on the morning of the 19th June and we passed it hand to hand and horse to horse until we got into Salt Lake City that evening at around 6 pm. Group II caught up an hour on its runs and we caught it up a further half hour during ours, which was a bit tricky in the streets of Salt Lake City!

What with small disasters besetting some of our group’s members, several of us got to ride two and three times!  I was lucky enough to ride the Pat Hearty’s Leonard and Matt Hearty’s Sonny!

I was even brave enough to use a Go Pro AND a helmet (the former unheard-of and the latter rare)!  Footage will follow after I learn how to edit it…it’s very long and a bit repetitive… but it gives a non-rider the sense of what it might feel like!

Sonny and I coming down from Lookout, or General Johnstone’s Pass, on my first PX ride, the same hill where Aleksandra finds plenty of trouble in A Long Trail Rolling!

DSC00004

Here’s Sonny and Leonard having a little break between rides:

DSC00011

Gregg Hearty off to an interesting start! (Sorry Gregg, this pic from previous year, but my rides seemed to always follow Gregg’s and wasn’t able to get a pic!) Kellie and Kevin Kimber in the background

Linda Hearty and a few riders at the Historic Stagecoach Inn near the old Camp Floyd!

The oh-so cruisy Sonny in the streets of Salt Lake, pausing for a snack with the freesias, lavender and freeway behind…

DSC00024

The Deseret News came and met with us on State Street leading in to Salt Lake and Pat’s son Matt Hearty and Kevin Kimber, Pat’s son-in-law made front page news on the day! Here’s the photo I took while the reporter got his famous slinging-on-of the mochila for the front page… starring Sonny on the right and Kellie (nee-Hearty) Kimber’s mare Cheyenne on the left.

IMG_1439

‘Let’s go!’  he says…

Thanks to the National Pony Express Association and the State Branches!  My personal appreciation to the Hearty and Hatch families for all their care and assistance!!

That’s all for tonight, folks!

The Mochila is Coming Closer

Here at the Pat and Linda Hearty residence,  we’re preparing and waiting with expectancy for Group 1 of the Utah Pony Express Association to hand over the mochila to us at Simpson Springs tomorrow morning!

Our team, Team 3, led by the Heartys, will have 42 rides of two miles each, which will be split up between the twenty horses and sixteen riders tomorrow, to complete our  85 mile portion of the over-2000 mile re-ride.

TOMORROW!

2016-reride (1)

We spent the day doing final shoeings with rubber shoes  or borium points for those horses who will complete our stretch into the streets of Salt Lake City.  I’m lucky enough to not be one of those riding through town, but who knows, by the end of the day!  While they guys finished shoeing, I set to work on six horses, being honourary groom… Manes and tails on these cool Quarter Horse brumbies… hadn’t seen a comb for awhile, so armed with a great brush and a bottle of Show Sheen, they’re NEARLY done!

Last prep for myself tonight, I’m learning how to use the Go-Pro, and will be riding with it on my hat!  Hope to have good footage tomorrow for you all!  Not  a western hat, but it will at least keep me from scrambling my brains in the unlikely event of a mishap! And it’ll hold the Go-Pro!  Here’s my practice run….

Hope to see some of you out on the trail, or at the talk at Joe and Annette Hatch’s place on Monday between 3 and 7 pm (see previous blog posts for details)!  Talk, readings, book signing, and of course, books for sale, by yours truly or two great Pony Express books by Patrick Hearty and Joe Hatch!

The Pony Express Rides Again!

It was fantastic, the Pony Express, wasn’t it? 400 horses, 120 riders, nearly two hundred stations and several hundred station keepers, water /feed carters and the like, through hostile territory, alkali deserts, and high mountains, to get mail across the continental USA in TEN DAYS! Unheard of!

The mochila, that piece of leather with the big (locked) pockets, slipped over the express pony’s saddle.

SADDLING PX

It would leave San Francisco and be transferred from the saddle of one horse to another, across two thousand miles of the Old West, through to St. Jo, Missouri! (They went the reverse direction, too, of course!)

PX MAP

But it only lasted eighteen months, I hear you say!  Yes, you’re right!

But now, it’s baaaaaccckkkkk…….

And it’s run every year, by a crazy bunch of historical horse nuts. There’s plenty of info here from the National Pony Express Association about the Pony Express, the trails, the stops, you name it, they’ve got it!  There are even classroom lessons!

assoc

If you want to join them, they’re always mad keen to have more people get involved to keep ‘The Pony’, as they call it, alive!

And I’m riding! Woo hoo!!!!!!

IMG_2597

So who’s with me?

I’m riding through ____________, the section of the trail in Utah where Aleksandra, my heroine, has her most ‘exciting’ ride!

(Fill in the answer correctly to go into the draw for a specially autographed copy of A Long Trail Rolling. Click on the Leave a comment button below!)

First, I plan to speak and sign books in Salt Lake City before the event, details forthcoming. If you can make it, keep your eyes on this blog!

BUT…

If you can’t make it, I’ll be wearing a Go-Pro! Luckily my portion of the trail is during the daylight hours, so you can see it too!

This is Patrick, the man who’s helped me so much with A Long Trail, and even written the Foreword. He’s a Past President of the NPEA and he and his family keep the history alive every year. He’s written several books about ‘the pony’  with Dr. Joe Hatch.

Simpson's Springs Station

I’ll be posting highlights and vlogs from the trail after my ride, so keep your eyes open between the 19th (USA time) and 21st of June!  Sorry I can’t live-stream, but I suspect internet and phone reception’s not the best out there!

Best wishes from NZ to you from all of us, we’ll be up in the Northern Hemisphere soon!

Love from NZ, here’s a pic of me and my equine boys… One is no longer with us, but he lives on through his brother…

Hi All!

It’s today!

It’s TODAY!!!

Okay, backtrack, sorry.

Paula Slater of Straight from the Horse’s Mouth, in Canada, interviewed me last week for her Radio Show!

See three blogs down for the article I wrote for her to post on her site along with it!

Anyway, the interview is live on their website NOW at
http://www.straightfromthehorsesmouthradioshow.com/SFHM-Radio-Show-DarkLogo1400x1400

Hmmm. Two days ago, Paula asked me for some horseback archery photos…

Right…

Which of course, I didn’t have…

And right now, I have a mangled shoulder…

And a horse who’s been ridden three times in the past four and a half years…

Okay…

Elliot?  Can you please take some pics for me before school for ten minutes?

🙂

Okay…now, hmmm.

Can’t draw bow with mangled right shoulder, but can hold it with right and draw with left…and let go of the reins…
All I can say is… Maya was pretty awesome. Me in my silk reenactment dress all over his bum as well…

ArcherMaya CROPPED

He wasn’t highly impressed to have to canter around in the green grass, when he would’ve been happier eating it…

CanterBowMaya

But he was pretty amazing.

Paula will be doing more interviews with me in future, one on equine dentistry (this goes to my veterinary website) and one on laminitis, for those horsey people out there!

Anyway, here are some other links where you can hear the podcast!

Oh no, the Furs! And Dzień!‘ she wailed and turned back to face the men.

Dinna fash, mo nighean. I kept the buyer here since yeste’day ’cause I knew ye were comin’. He’s paid fer yer pelts ‘n gone.’ Scotty rumpled her hair.

She smiled her thanks, color returning to her cheeks.

‘And that pony, he’s got a heart o’ gold. Ye dinna need to go, yon wee man’s in the stable, munching’ away with me old geldin’.’

Aleksandra’s chest heaved in a deep sigh. ‘What would I do without you, Scotty?’

‘It’s the least I kin do fer you and yer da,’ Scotty remarked, his voice becoming gruff as he spoke, and a tear glistened in his eye.

‘Papa wouldn’t have been pleased to see Dzień abused so, but there was nothing else for it. He never even slowed down.’ She looked at the floor.

‘Aye, but he’s a bonny one.’ Scotty smiled.

‘It would’ve meant the world to Papa, knowing we made it on time and our year’s work wasn’t for naught.’ Scotty was pleased to see a hint of the girl’s normal glow showing in her eyes, beneath the wet lashes.

‘Right ye are, missy.’ He raised his brows at her. ‘Now, d’ye want me to hold some o’ the money fer now so it canna be taken off ye by highwaymen?’

‘Thanks, Scotty, please keep it all here. I don’t need it yet.’

‘Are ye sure ye need t’leave tonight?’ Scotty was unconvinced. ‘It’s getting’ mighty late, we could make you a bed o’sorts.’

Aleksandra’s eyes narrowed at the dark man still standing in the doorway.

‘I’d rather risk the highwaymen and the wild animals for tonight, thanks. I’ve got my shashka and bow.’

There was a choking sound from the entrance, then Xavier mumbled something about checking the horses and disappeared outside. Scotty turned away and coughed to hide his chuckle from the pair.

Xavier was harnessing Dzień to the wagon when Aleksandra came outside.

‘I can do that,’ she snapped, rushing to the side of the pony, her blue eyes icy and cheeks flushed pink. Xavier smiled at her back as she hurried around to the pony’s other side to finish.

‘I’m sure you can, Querida, but I’m happy to help,’ he said, wrapping a breeching strap around the shaft and buckling it snugly.

‘Thanks,’ she gritted out, looking away as her hands slid down Dzień’s rump towards the crupper.

‘Any possibility you might tell me just why you went loco on me back there?’ Xavier watched her brows drop as she stared at a strap she’d just buckled too tightly. Her lips tightened further as she readjusted it.

‘I want nothing to do with people who insult my friends.’

Como, what?’ He shook his head and blinked at her.

‘My friends, the Shoshone, the only friends I have left alive, other than Scotty,‘ she said from between clenched teeth, and then slumped, sobbing, against Dzień.

Cautious of her all-too-effective looking sword, Xavier slowly approached her. He slid his arm around her shoulders and pulled her against him, watchful for any fast moves on her part, not caring if her tears soaked his shirt. How long they stayed like this, he neither knew nor cared. Once her sobs quieted, he slipped his fingers under her chin, lifting her face to stare into the watery depths of her blue eyes.

‘Okay now, Querida?’

‘As okay as possible, I guess.’ She dropped her head again. ‘The Shoshone are like family to me, especially since Mama died,’ she murmured into his shirt.

‘Are you sure you won’t stay here? I’ll sleep in the stable, if it would make you happier.’

She closed her eyes and was still.

‘No, it’s okay. I’m sorry, Xavier. I’m upset, but that’s no excuse for my nastiness. Thank you for this.’ She nodded her head at his tearstained chest.

De nada. It is nothing.’ He smiled. ‘May I accompany you to your home, at least?’

‘No, really, I’m fine, thank you again. I’d better go farewell Scotty, it’s getting late.’

‘If you’re sure…’ Xavier shook his head and followed Aleksandra back inside.

A Long Trail Rolling–Aleks and Xavier meet…and sparks fly…

Cover for A Long Trail Rolling

Hello All!

Here’s a bit of the story from when Aleksandra and Xavier have just met… and clashed, just a little… 🙂

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She saw the men exchange glances over her head.
‘Aleksandra, is that safe? You know about the unrest between the Pah-Utes and the settlers’ army, don’t you?’ Xavier brushed his hair back from his face with his hand, the light reflecting off the signet ring on his middle finger.
She scowled at the dark Californio. ‘My father is blood-brother to the ShoshoneChief,’ she tossed her head at him, ‘of course I’ll be welcome in their village.’
Xavier’s face shadowed and his lips tightened to a fine line. ‘It’s your funeral.’ He turned from her and moved to stand just outside the door, staring off into the distance.
‘Children, children,’ Scotty muttered under his breath and shook his head. ‘Aleks, I’m sorry to remind you of him, but who’s this “Vladdie”? We need to get word ’round so we kin bring ‘im to justice.’
She dragged her gaze back to Scotty from where she found it, perusing the handsome stranger’s broad shoulders and trim hips in snug leather leggings.
‘That’s the scary part, Scotty,’ she paused and looked back at Xavier. Despite her anger, she had to admit he was a fine figure of a man, with raven blue-black hair past the collar of his buckskin shirt and sparking brown eyes, nearly black when she fell into them as she awoke…
She shook her head and refocused, turning to Scotty.
‘Vladimir Chabardine. Cossack arms master, servant of the Tsar, armed and extremely dangerous. Papa’s nemesis.’ She looked down at the ground, pausing until her voice returned.
‘OKyy….’ Scotty ventured, eyebrows raised. ‘How will we know ‘im?’
‘Unfortunately, I don’t know what he looks like. He’s Russian or Ukrainian. Papa said he had blond hair, probably gray by now, and a strong accent. He’s ten years older than Papa. He’ll handle a horse and a shashka like a Cossack, but further than that, I know nothing,’ she said, dropping her eyes to the floor and looking away.
‘Sure that’s all y’know?’ Scotty raised his eyebrows at her.
Why do I get the feelin’ there’s somethin’ she ain’t tellin’ me?
‘Well, Rogan’s missing,’ the trader saw Aleksandra bite the side of her cheek, ‘so I imagine he’ll have taken him. He’s an unusual horse for these parts, wouldn’t you think?’ Aleksandra’s eyes seemed to hold a challenge and this time she didn’t look away.
Scotty tilted his head sideways and pursed his lips. ‘What else, girlie?’
Aleksandra squirmed and was silent for a moment before she burst into action and spun toward the door. ‘Well, gentlemen, thanks for the shut-eye, but it’ll be dark before I get home as it is, so I’d best get going,’ she said, then stopped short.
Oh no, the Furs! And Dzień!‘ she wailed and turned back to face the men.
Dinna fash, mo nighean. I kept the buyer here since yeste’day ’cause I knew ye were comin’. He’s paid fer yer pelts ‘n gone.’ Scotty rumpled her hair.
She smiled her thanks, color returning to her cheeks.
‘And that pony, he’s got a heart o’ gold. Ye dinna need to go, yon wee man’s in the stable, munching’ away with me old geldin’.’
Aleksandra’s chest heaved in a deep sigh. ‘What would I do without you, Scotty?’
‘It’s the least I kin do fer you and yer da,’ Scotty remarked, his voice becoming gruff as he spoke, and a tear glistened in his eye.
‘Papa wouldn’t have been pleased to see Dzień abused so, but there was nothing else for it. He never even slowed down.’ She looked at the floor.
‘Aye, but he’s a bonny one.’ Scotty smiled.
‘It would’ve meant the world to Papa, knowing we made it on time and our year’s work wasn’t for naught.’ Scotty was pleased to see a hint of the girl’s normal glow showing in her eyes, beneath the wet lashes.
‘Right ye are, missy.’ He raised his brows at her. ‘Now, d’ye want me to hold some o’ the money fer now so it canna be taken off ye by highwaymen?’
‘Thanks, Scotty, please keep it all here. I don’t need it yet.’
Horse of the Year Show, Hastings NZ… and we’ll be there with A Long Trail Rolling!
FARMLANDS HORSE OF THE YEAR 17TH-22ND MARCH 2015A Blue Mist Pub cropped jpg
What is it, you say?
Farmlands Horse of the Year Show is the largest equestrian event in the Southern Hemisphere hosted annually at the Hawke’s Bay A&P Showgrounds in March, which has been held for 16 years.Equestrians from 17 Equestrian Disciplines compete for the title of Farmlands Horse of the Year within their Section. Both equestrian and non-equestrian people can come and experience the excitement of the Showjumping and Eventing competitions with the beauty of the Showing and Dressage classes, the delicacy of the Miniatures with the might of the gentle giants, the Clydesdales. There are over 200 trade sites to satisfy all of your retail therapy needs from saddlery and farm equipment to clothing and jewellery, and there are fri/sat night shows  to entertain the crowd with tough competition and action and displays very rarely seen in such a setting.
We will be there in the Stallion Marquee, letter H on their map, from Thursday through Sunday, in the Blue Mist Publishing/ The Long Trail Rolling booth!
We plan to spend plenty of time speaking with people about  A Long Trail Rolling, the next three books in The Long Trails series, and writing and publishing in general! If people want books signed, we can do that as well.
If we’re not in our booth, I’ll be signing books at the Horse & Pony Bookshop booth at the Dressage Arena!
Still awaiting confirmation:  If it works out, I’ll also be doing some equine veterinary dentistry talks while we’re down there. Keep an eye out at the booth in H!
Looking forward to seeing you!
(It shouldn’t be hard to find you… there will only be 85,000 other people there over the six days of the show! Big show for a little country, indeed! )
The Boys working together
It will be easier to go this time… Last time, I was driving the 22 Tonne horse truck with Shemaya and his Glinkowski carriage in the back and a young master Elliot beside me, as my groom for the carriage driving competitions!  This time in a little MG and boxes and boxes of books!
Until then!
Have a lovely day!
What a book launch!
Hello All!
Thank you for coming along to the launch at Smith Flat House in Placerville, CA, on the 14 of January, 2015!
A Long Trail Rolling is finally rolling!
BUY LINKS:
For those of you who have asked, here are the best buy links!
Softcover: CreateSpace
Ebooks: Smashwords
Ebooks and paper: Amazon
We are planning a book signing tour around New Zealand right now! Please let me  know if you have a great venue and a crowd to go with it!
I’ll post the video from the launch party as soon as it’s available!
We gave away a few paper copies of A Long Trail Rolling and Cover Posters on the night, and we nearly sold out of a whole box of books!
I spoke about what history means to me, historicals, my thoughts on the process of my writing, and read two excerpts.
Prize draws of paper copies of A Long Trail Rolling and posters of the cover were enthusiastically welcomed!
People especially liked hearing about how I wrote the story, and why, which was a bit surprising to me! They were also interested to hear about the current opportunities in self publishing. I think a few people might just progress the writing they started in the past… and were afraid to pursue!
Thanks to everybody, once again, for coming along! Can’t wait to catch up with the rest of you!
Just as an aside…The book launch ‘happened’ at the end of a tour of southern England… and the Isle of Wight… where I found the inspiration for the next series!
Here’s my new author pic, taken by Matt at the B & B where we stayed in Goring-by-Sea,  a neighbourhood of the Borough of Worthing in West Sussex, England. I’ll talk about it another time!
My new author pic, taken by the man at our B & B in Goring-by-Sea. What a fantastic trip!  Thank you Matthew!
Freebie excerpt!
Lookout Pass, she reminded herself as she neared the summit. Glancing north to the distant white tops of the Onaqui Mountains, she swallowed hard as she thought again of her papa and the fossil he’d fossicked for her from its rocky ledges.
The spotted pony broke into a lope over the crest of the hill and began the mile-long descent. Aleksandra’s thoughts filled with memories, she was absentmindedly fingering the fossil inside the medicine bag hung about her neck when she felt the first arrow whizz past her head.
Her heart stopped in its tracks and she flung herself to the left side of the Palouse’s neck in a Cossack hang, lying flat against his side.
‘Yah! Yah! Let’s go, Scout!’ she shouted, throwing the reins at him.
He needed little urging to run full tilt down the steep and treacherously rocky trail as the yells of Indian warriors echoed through the narrow valley. The arrows came hard and fast from the southwest, screaming like a mad bunch of hornets.
Smart. Her lips curved in the hint of a wry grin.
The Indians had placed themselves between the trail and the setting sun, so Aleksandra couldn’t see her attackers in the glimpses she stole,from beneath Scout’s neck, of the world whizzing past. With the ground only three feet from her head, the scent of sage filled her nostrils when Scout crashed through a clump of brush. Briefly considering letting go of one of her death-grip holds onto the racing horse to pull a gun from her holster, something akin to suicide, she tightened her lip in a grimace and stayed put, trusting far more in the Palouse’s speed and handiness to save them. Knowing her weight hanging off to one side had to put him off his best, she tried to stay out of his way, keeping as still as possible, tucked down on the side of the skidding and leaping beast. Praying the cinch would hold, she sent fervent thanks to the pony selectors for their choice of horses.
How I would love to have my bow and arrows, but I only need to get us through to Doc Faust at Rush—
The Palouse interrupted her musings as he threw up his head and reared, angrily trumpeting and shaking his head for a moment, nearly dropping Aleksandra, then resumed his headlong rush down the hill. When he carried on, she heard whistling sounds with every breath and turned her face forward to see where the noise was coming from.
Then she saw the arrow.
Looking forward to seeing you soon!
Kind regards,
Lizzi Tremayne
And the best news of all…..
The best news of all is that…
Ta Da…..
Patrick Hearty, my Pony Express Expert, is going to write the Forward for A Long Trail Rolling!
Patrick and Dr. Joseph Hatch wrote a book about the Pony Express Stations in Utah, called….  you guessed it!
This was the start of an epic trip across Utah, over the Pony Express Trail, Patrick, his lovely wife, my son and I!
Simpson’s Station, the restored version… It’s lovely… I think it might be on the cover of A Long Trail Rolling!
I so loved just being able to touch the old station... even if it was rebuilt!
The Mustangs…  They feature in the story, near Dugway!
Here’s a cool pic of them… you’ll understand why we didn’t get any closer to them… The stallion, if you can see it close up, is battle scarred and proud, clearly the winner of many a fight with other stallions for the mares in his herd.
If you ever get the chance to go over the Utah Pony Express Trail, do it, you’ll not regret it.
There’s even a man, Davy Crockett, yes, Davy Crockett, who runs an ultramarathon (running) over 100 miles of the trail. See his website at http://ponyexpress100.org/
To those of you who have horses and want to be involved, there’s a re-ride, in both directions, every year. You can ride your portion and carry the mochila. Patrick’s sent me a commemorative  letter two years running, one in each direction.. One from St Louis and one from San Francisco. Got this one last year…  and they even forwarded it to NEW ZEALAND!
 A 2013 Pony Express Commemorative Letter! In NZ!
A 2013 Pony Express Commemorative Letter! In NZ!
How exciting. Thank you Pat!  And thank you to all the horses and riders who carried those little letters in the mochila for a total of over 4000 miles!   Let me know if you’re interested in riding in a re-ride and I’ll get word to Patrick.
There’s a great website about the Pony Express at   http://www.xphomestation.com/  From that site, here’s a news release of the ride just past…  http://www.xphomestation.com/2014-NR1.pdf  Tom Crews, who runs the site, has placed oodles of  news, history, stories, etc. of the Pony Express, as well as school program information on the trail!  When the re-ride is going, they track the mochilas in real time as they cross the United States! Stop by and see them!
 Thanks so much again to Patrick and his wonderful family for having us and letting us in on their life and trail…  The Pony Express Trail.
Thanks for stopping by!
See you again real soon!
… And the winner is…… A LONG TRAIL ROLLING, by Lizzi Tremayne!
Yep, we did it!
My first novel, A Long Trail Rolling, has won the 2014 RWNZ Pacific Hearts Award!
To say I’m pleased is a bit of an understatement!  The big one I get to keep for this year, and a smaller version, inscribed with 2014, forever!
The conference was fantastic, with amazing speakers from New Zealand and overseas, including:
James Scott Bell, Marie Force and, Courtney Milan, Yvonne Lindsay, Trish Morey,  bestselling authors
Jim Azevedo from Smashwords
Kevan Lyon from Marsal Lyon Literary Agency
Sue Brockhoff and Lilia Kanna from Harlequin Australia
Malle Vallik from Harlequin North America
Flo Nicoll from Harlequin UK
Sarah Fairhall, Penguin Australia
Karina Bliss, Yvonne Walus, Kamy Chetty, Lisa Whitefern and Frances Housden, award winning authors
With such a lineup, we couldn’t miss, other than not being physically able to attend every workshop!
The agents and editors took pitches throughout the weekend. I pitched A  Long Trail Rolling and its sequels to:
Kevan Lyon, Founding Partner of Marsal Lyon Literary Agency,
Sue Brockhoff, Head of Publishing at Harlequin (Australia) and
Malle Vallik of Harlequin Digital Editorial Initiatives North America (Toronto)
AND…
They have all requested the full manuscript!
I’m sure it helps to have won the competition!
Oh, and for my spare time, I was promoted to Secretary of the RWNZ this year, so I should be able to keep up with what is going on!
Now back to work, to get these submissions finished!
No rest for the wicked!
Take care, all!
Storyboard for ‘Intervening Novel’ Created…
Yes, you heard me right…
I’ve given in…
Some of my fantastic beta readers have told me things like…..
“Too much has happened between A Long Trail Rolling and its Epilogue.”
(Hmmm… I didn’t really think so, but your other comments were well-received, Kate…)
Thanks, Kate L.
Matt’s been a bit more blunt…
“You need another novel in between A Long Trail Rolling and A Sea of Green Unfolding”, he said, out of the blue the other day.
(Hmmm… just redid my business card to reflect novels number one and two…)
Thanks, Matt…
A Sea of Green Unfolding
What does he know, anyway? He’s just another author…
Hmmm…
It simply didn’t bear considering, as I was flying along with Sea of Green and didn’t want to look back over my shoulder. I tried to forget about it.
Enter Sheryl, hostess of our monthly C2C RWNZ Branch meeting. Last Saturday, Sheryl, a writer and teacher, offered a fantastic workshop on creation of storyboards as a preparation for novel writing…  and Matt had to say it…  again…
“You ought to do your board on the novel between your first and third.”
“My first and third?” I knew what he meant, but wasn’t about to admit it… “I’ve only written two..”
He’s relentless.
“Stories.” He arched an eyebrow at me.
“Oh.” I gulped.
He just grinned and returned to perusing magazines for visuals of characters to use in his own storyboard for his upcoming “Glass” speculative fiction quadrilogy.
“But I haven’t thought about it yet,” I muttered, as I slunk away to find some materials.
Grumble, grumble…
Out of the ashes of my attitude has come…
Ta da!
…the storyboard for the ‘intervening’, soon to be my second, novel.
A Sea of Green Unfolding will have to be relegated to third novel…  but I’m going to finish it first!
So here’s the storyboard.. It’s unfinished, as yet, but it’s on its way!
It’s 3-D, so I’ve shown it in two views!
20140729_101939 20140729_101910
In this ‘new’ second  novel, Aleksandra and Xavier’s 1860 saga continues from the Pony Express Trail of Utah, via the gold country of 1860’s Nevada and California, through Old San Francisco, to the old Californio Rancho de las Pulgas, Xavier’s old family hacienda.
The ‘new’ third novel, A Sea of Green Unfolding, will take up where this one leaves off…
Working on a name for this new ‘second’, intervening, novel… Something about “The Hills of Gold…. ”  or “The Golden Hills… “
Can you think of a good name?  I’d love to hear it! This might have to become a competition!
BIG THANKS to both Kate and Matt,
you were both right.
Thanks for coming by!
Take good care and see you again soon!
Lizzi
A Long Trail Rolling is a Pacific Hearts Finalist
Hello All!
Thanks for stopping by! A couple of bits of news for you today!
I’ve just heard I’ve been selected  as one of three  finalists in the RWNZ Pacific Hearts Award 2014 with A Long Trail Rolling (previously called Express Desire).  The Pacific Hearts Award is a full-novel competition, the only one run by RWNZ! (For more information:  http://www.romancewriters.co.nz/contests/pacific-hearts-award-2014-2/ ).
 Pacific Hearts trophies
Winners will be announced at the upcoming RWNZ Conference, http://www.romancewriters.co.nz/2014-conference/
I’m truly buzzed about my placing!  Can’t wait to hear! Hope to see many of you at the conference!
More news,  I’ll be the new Secretary of the RWNZ, starting at said conference!
My final bit of news, is that author Jean Drew offered me a great opportunity, a guest post on her blog this week!
It’s up now and is entitled  ‘Love of all things historical gets Lizzie writing!’
In it, I answer questions, like:
When did you first consider yourself a writer?
In which genre do you prefer to write and why?
Can you give us some details about your upcoming release/s?
Who are some of your favourite authors?
When you are not writing, what are your hobbies, passions, etc?
Do you have any advice for new writers beginning their adventure?
And then there’s a blurb, an excerpt from A Long Trail Rolling,
and a new Bio!
Hop on over and take a look!
It’s at  http://adventuresinauthorland.blogspot.co.nz/2014/07/love-of-all-things-historical-gets.html
Feel free to come back and tell me what you think
Thanks for visiting!
Regards until next time,
